SDMRRA Youth Program.
The purpose of the San Diego Model Railroad Association Youth Program is to attract youngsters - teens and pre-teens - to the hobby of model railroading.
Requirements of the program are relatively simple. Youngsters must be less than 18 years of age, and a parent must accompany each child to each session.
The Program is advertised by word-of-mouth, posters around the layout, announcements in the newsletter of the San Diego Model Railroad Museum, and on the websites of the Museum and the San Diego Model Railroad Association.
Each session will span a two-hour period before the Museum opens – 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. – on the first Saturday of each month except for December and January. Featured activities during each monthly session will include
The educational part of the Program will provide a hands-on introduction to the basic elements of HO-scale and O-Scale model railroading – kit building, decaling and weathering cars and engines, identifying different types of locomotives and rolling stock, constructing and maintaining layouts, wiring, scratch building from historic photographs, and making scenery. It will examine the different types of model railroad equipment available today, and give hands-on instruction how to weight cars, and change wheels and couplers to meet Association standards. There also will be an introduction to DCC (Digital Command Control), and one of our committee members has authority to sign-off on requirements needed for the Boy Scout’s Model Railroading Merit Badge.
Space in the program will be limited to no more than ten participants each year Applicants will be accepted on a first-come, first served basis. Pre-registration is required. Once the Program fills up, a waiting list will be maintained to fill vacancies in the Program as openings become available.
